The Kano State Censorship Board has suspended a planned unofficial debate involving two Islamic singers over security concerns.

The board said the event involving Usman Maidubun-Isa and Sulaiman Uzair could trigger tension across the state.

This is contained in a statement issued on Monday in Kano by the board’s spokesman, Abdullahi Sani-Sulaiman.

Sani-Sulaiman said the planned debate involved sensitive issues capable of causing unrest and disturbing public peace.

He said, “Organising such a debate without approval from relevant authorities constitutes an offence punishable under the law.”

He said organisers failed to collaborate with the Kano State Shari’a Commission, the Kano State Council of Ulama, or the board.

He recalled that a similar unofficial debate months earlier led to tension in parts of Kano.

According to him, supporters of Maidubun-Isa and Shehi Maitajul’izzi clashed, disrupting peace in affected communities.

Sani-Sulaiman said the law establishing the board empowered it to regulate Islamic singers’ activities statewide.

He said the board had also alerted security agencies to prevent possible disturbances among supporters.

He added, “Stopping such unofficial debates remains necessary to protect public peace, safety and morality.”

He urged Islamic singers and residents to cooperate with authorities to preserve unity and maintain order. (NAN)
