Jonathan appoints new Chief Judge for Abuja

Justice Ibrahim M. Bukar is now the substantive Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

His appointment by President Goodluck Jonathan followed the recommendation of the National Judicial Council under headed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar. Justice Bukar’s appointment has been confirmed by the Nigerian Senate, before whose Committee on Judiciary he appeared for screening on September 20.

Justice Bukar has been acting in the position since May 23 this year in the wake of the retirement, ten days earlier, of the erstwhile Chief Judge, Justice L. H. Gummi.

Justice Bukar, who hails from Borno State, was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981 in Lagos. He took up appointment as a Judge of the FCT High Court in 1992.
