A high-stakes battle for the soul of Federal Government College (FGC) Kano has erupted into a full-scale legal and political war.

At the center of the storm is a controversial Public-Private Partnership (PPP) that ceded approximately 33 hectares –roughly 40% of the school’s total land area, to Pluck Global Construction Company. While government officials frame the deal as a “strategic intervention” to upgrade crumbling facilities, the school’s alumni association (FGCKOSA) has branded it a “coordinated contract scam” and a direct threat to the safety and future of the students.

The financial details of the “land-swap” model have sparked fierce outrage. The FGCKOSA alleges that the prime land being handed over is valued at over N36 billion. In exchange, the developer is committed to providing infrastructure projects—including a sports complex, health center, and classroom renovations—valued at just N8.5 billion.

Critics argue that this lopsided deal effectively “pockets” over N28 billion for private developers at the expense of the federal government. Internal whistleblowers have reportedly claimed the land’s true market value could even exceed N70 billion, yet it was ceded for a fraction of its worth.

FGCKOSA leaders have pointedly accused top hierarchy members, including the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad of having a vested interest in the PPP.

Further scrutiny has fallen on the developer’s leadership. Musaddiq Ado Bala Talle, the Managing Director of Pluck Global, is reportedly a close associate of high-ranking regional political figures, leading to accusations that the school’s heritage is being traded for political patronage.

Stakeholders warn of a catastrophic impact on students’ welfare because introducing a private residential estate within the school’s perimeter merges a high-security boarding environment with a public commercial zone, exposing students to “avoidable risks”. The land earmarked for the swap includes the school’s main sports fields and open spaces, which are essential for students’ physical and mental health. Also affected according to the Alumni are the site of the school mosque and chapel – facilities central to the integration and spiritual life of the “Unity School”.

The legal battle has already reached the courts. Reports indicate that a Federal High Court has ordered the maintenance of the status quo, halting construction on the disputed land. However, the alumni allege that Ministry officials have encouraged workers to remain on-site in defiance of the law.

FGCKOSA president, Shoyinka Shodunke has made it clear that the association is seeking nothing less than full prosecution, having already petitioned the EFCC and ICPC for a criminal investigation. A high-level complaint has also been sent to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, co-signed by prominent alumni like BUA Group Chairman Abdul Samad Rabiu, calling for the immediate cancellation of the deal.

As of today, the alumni association maintains a strict “Caveat Emptor” (Buyer Beware) warning: any land purchased within this development is part of an illegal transaction that will be fought to the end. (The Nation)
