The African Democratic Congress National Legislators Serving and Former Forum (ADC-NF) has raised concerns over what it described as growing threats to Nigeria’s democracy, accusing the presidency of actions capable of undermining opposition politics and judicial independence.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja yesterday on behalf of the forum, Nnenna Ukeje of the 8th National Assembly, said recent developments in the country demand “vigilance, courage, and collective sacrifice” to safeguard democratic institutions.
The group was reacting to remarks by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who reportedly described the recent ADC national convention as “noise and a street convention.”
Ukeje said the comment was not only dismissive but contradicted the President’s past as an opposition figure.
Defending the party’s convention, the forum admitted that the ADC faced challenges in securing a venue but chose to engage directly with the people rather than incur what it described as excessive spending.
“What is described dismissively as a ‘street’ event was, in fact, democracy in its most authentic and organic form; close to the people, held by the people, and celebrated by Nigerians,” she said.
The forum also warned against executive interference in judicial processes, noting that issues referenced by the President are currently before courts, including the Supreme Court and Federal High Court.
The group further cited alleged remarks by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, which it claimed suggested efforts to influence internal disputes within the ADC.
“When such statements are made in the context of active litigation, they raise legitimate concerns about coordinated efforts to influence outcomes, particularly judicially,” the forum stated.
The legislators also raised concerns over the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing the commission of inconsistency and perceived bias in handling internal party matters. (Daily Trust)
