National Youth Council of Nigeria (Diaspora) has appealed to United Arab Emirates, calling for a review of the case of Mr. Sodiq Bello, a Nigerian detained since November 2024 without formal charges or trial.
The appeal was contained in an open letter signed by President of the Council, Collins Idahosa, titled “Open Appeal to the government of the United Arab Emirates on the Prolonged Detention of a Nigerian Youth.”
In the letter, Idahosa said 30-year Bello was stopped in November 2024 while transiting to Ghana and has remained in custody since then at Abu Dhabi Central Jail (Al Wathba).
The letter said Bello has not been charged before a court or given opportunity to defend himself against allegations.
Idahosa noted that NYCN Diaspora had reported to Nigerian High Commission in Dubai.
The letter reads: “National Youth Council of Nigeria (Diaspora), through its UAE Chapter, has brought this matter to the attention of Nigerian High Commission in Dubai. However, given the prolonged detention and absence of due process, we make this public appeal in the interest of justice, fairness, and protection of fundamental human rights.’’
“We respectfully urge the UAE authorities to:
“Conduct a prompt and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Bello’s detention.
Ensure that he is either formally charged and granted access to a fair and timely trial, or released if no credible evidence exists against him.
“Uphold international legal standards and human rights principles to which the UAE is a respected signatory.
“The relationship between Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates is one built on mutual respect, cooperation, and shared interests. It is in this spirit that we make this appeal, trusting in the UAE’s commitment to justice, rule of law, and humane treatment of all individuals within its jurisdiction.
“We remain hopeful that this matter will receive the urgent attention it deserves and that Mr. Bello’s rights will be duly upheld. (The Nation, excluding headline)
