The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has distanced itself from what it described as an unauthorised move by a group of individuals to convene an Emergency Delegates Meeting (EDM), declaring the planned gathering illegal and void.
In a press release issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Mannir Bature, the association said its National Officers Committee had become aware of “ongoing unauthorised activities” by persons allegedly parading themselves as members of the body while attempting to organise the meeting.
The association stated unequivocally that no EDM had been approved by the Office of the Secretary-General or any legally recognised organ of the NMA, stressing that its constitution does not empower any individual or group to unilaterally convene such a meeting outside established procedures.
“Any such gathering being organised in the name of the NMA is therefore illegal, null and void, and should be disregarded by all members,” the statement said.
The NMA warned that any individual or group found using its name or platform to engage in unlawful acts, incite disorder, or cause destruction of property would be held accountable in line with its constitution and other applicable regulations.
It further cautioned members against participating in unauthorised meetings or activities capable of undermining the unity and stability of the association, reiterating its commitment to order, discipline, and constitutional governance.
The association also called on security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, to monitor the situation and take necessary action against individuals or groups whose actions may threaten peace and public safety.
Reaffirming its stance, the NMA assured members of its resolve to protect the integrity of the association and ensure that all its processes are conducted strictly in line with its constitution. (TRIBUNE)
