Switzerland is planning to introduce stricter rules on foreign property ownership as authorities grapple with mounting housing shortages and population pressures.
In a statement, the government said, “Switzerland plans to tighten restrictions on foreigners buying local real estate to address worsening housing shortages, amid an upcoming referendum on a 10 million population cap.”
The Federal Council has launched a consultation process on the proposed measures, which would require non-EU/EFTA nationals to obtain official authorization before purchasing a primary residence in the country. The consultation period will run until July 15, allowing stakeholders and the public to provide feedback.
According to the government, “The Federal Council is starting a consultation on new restrictions that would require non-EU/EFTA nationals to obtain authorization before purchasing a primary residence in Switzerland. The proposal is open for feedback until July 15.”
The move comes ahead of a crucial national vote scheduled for June 14, which could reshape Switzerland’s demographic trajectory. Authorities described the vote as a “high-stakes referendum on June 14 concerning the 10 million initiative, which seeks to put a cap on the permanent resident population.”
The proposed population cap initiative has been driven by growing public concern over the impact of population growth on infrastructure and living standards. Officials noted that the initiative is in response to “concerns about overcrowding, traffic jams, and high rents,” with many residents worried that increasing population levels are eroding the country’s quality of life.
The outcome of both the consultation and the referendum is expected to play a significant role in determining Switzerland’s housing and immigration policies in the coming years. (Arise News)
