The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has confirmed Akon Eyakenyi as his running mate in the 2027 governorship election.
Speaking at a church service in Uyo, Eno clarified that his decision to choose her again was a result of her loyalty, cooperation, and contribution to the state, which he said had ensured the smooth operation of his administration.
The governor urged the people to build relationships rooted in love, shun religious discrimination and tribalism, and support one another, as this will ensure the nation’s growth and development.
Speaking at the event, Governor Eno described Senator Eyakenyi as a dependable and trustworthy partner in governance, whose commitment has significantly contributed to the smooth running of the state.
“She has been very dedicated, committed, trustworthy, and supportive. She has never for once disappointed us. So, if you make me governor 10 times, she will be my deputy governor ten times,” the governor said.
He stressed that effective governance requires a shared vision and mutual understanding between a governor and deputy, noting that his working relationship with Senator Eyakenyi had remained cordial and productive.
“For governance to be successful and beneficial to the people in the state, one must have a deputy who shares and believes in his vision and values, and always works in agreement with the governor. Mine has indeed deputised for me very excellently,” he added.
Governor Eno further noted that their partnership is built on years of trust and alignment, contrasting it with situations where discord between governors and their deputies hampers governance.
“In recent times, most deputy governors would want to get their governors out as quickly as possible. But here, she is really a great delight to us,” he stated.
The governor also used the occasion to honour Eyakenyi as Akwa Ibom State’s “Man of the Year,” praising his steadfast support for his wife and describing him as a model husband, father, and statesman.
“We are not just here celebrating you for being 80, but for me, as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, I celebrate you today as the Akwa Ibom Man of the Year, for standing by the deputy governor and indeed a true statesman,” he said.
He added that the deputy governor’s qualities reflect her upbringing and family values, noting that her performance in office is a testament to strong personal foundations.
Governor Eno congratulated the octogenarian on his milestone and thanked God for his life, describing it as one marked by impact and service to humanity.
In his remarks, Elder Eyakenyi expressed gratitude to God for His grace and faithfulness over the years, attributing his life’s achievements to divine mercy.
Also speaking, the deputy governor thanked God for preserving her husband and described their journey as one defined by grace and sustained faith. (Channels News)
