HURIWA National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has raised concerns over worsening insecurity and governance challenges in the country, describing the situation as “pathetic” and deeply troubling.
The organisation’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, said insecurity has reached alarming levels across multiple states.
“The general state of the nation is pathetic. Insecurity is alarming and affects human rights,” Onwubiko said Friday in an exclusive interview with News Express.
He stated that kidnapping and violent attacks are now widespread, adding that “23 states are classified as dangerous because of kidnapping,” while even the Federal Capital Territory is affected in some areas.
He further noted that armed non-state actors continue to operate with impunity, while economic conditions deteriorate.
“Nigerians are hungry. There is no employment for youths. Government institutions that are supposed to empower them are not doing their work,” he said.
Onwubiko described the situation as reflective of a deeper governance failure.
“All are symptoms of a failed state. Armed non-state actors are killing citizens with impunity,” he said.
He also criticised the judiciary and legislature, alleging institutional weakness.
“The judiciary is dead. The legislature is taken over by the executive arm of government,” he added.
