FCT Minister Wike addressing audience as he paid tribute to late Senator Mpigi
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, broke down in tears as he paid tribute to late Senator Barinada Barry Mpigi at a Night of Tribute held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday.
Wike, who spoke emotionally during the event, described Mpigi as a loyal and dedicated ally, recalling their close relationship over the years.
The minister said political associates must go beyond paying tributes and stand firmly by the family of the deceased, stressing that practical support remains essential.
“Forming committees for burial is not enough. We must show clearly that we will not abandon the family he left behind,” he said.
Wike also announced a N500 million support fund by the Rivers State Rainbow Coalition to sustain the legacy of the late lawmaker.
He described Mpigi as a fearless and dependable ally who stood firm during difficult political moments, noting that true character is revealed in times of adversity.
According to him, the late senator remained loyal when others faltered, contributing significantly to political stability and effective representation in Rivers State.
“When we had political challenges, Barry was always coming to my house to show solidarity and commitment. One day, he came very early in the morning, he looked at me and said, master, no matter the situation, I will never leave you,” Wike said, while fighting tears.
Wike further praised Mpigi’s commitment to the Ogoni people, highlighting his role in the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology, Ogoni.
He added that the N500 million intervention would be used to establish a foundation for the family, aimed at providing long-term support and preserving the legacy of the late senator. (Nigerian Tribune)
