Ogun State Police spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi
The Police in Ogun State have arrested two suspects accused of luring foreign nationals to Nigeria and defrauding them under the pretence of facilitating their travel to Europe.
The suspects, Stephen Kwame and Abubakar Sulaimon, were arrested at their hideout in the Owode Egba area of the state.
Spokesperson for Ogun State Police command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the suspects confined the victims illegally after luring them to Nigeria.
Babaseyi said upon receiving intelligence via Interpol, operatives of the command swiftly mobilised, stormed the hideout and rescued a 40-year-old Ghanaian named Maclaud Owusu, alongside eight others.
He noted that the victims were deceived and confined upon arrival in Nigeria, with their mobile phones used to contact relatives and associates to demand money under false pretences.
He said: “On April 6, 2026, about noon, following actionable intelligence received via Interpol, operatives of the unit swiftly mobilised and stormed the identified criminal hideout where one Maclaud Owusu, ‘m’, 40, a Ghanaian national, was being unlawfully held.
“The operation led to the successful rescue of the victim unhurt alongside eight other victims held under similar circumstances.” he added
The police spokesman stated that the principal victim, Owusu, was defrauded of the sum of $31,000 (about N3.9 million) before police intervention. (The Guardian)
