Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State
By BONIFACE AKARAH
The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) has criticised the Anambra State Government over the continuation of public school activities during the Christian Holy Week, describing the move as insensitive to religious observance.
The group specifically faulted the decision not to close public schools ahead of Good Friday, which fell on March 27, 2026, noting that many private schools in the state had already shut down to allow students and staff participate in religious activities.
According to the group, the development denied students and teachers the opportunity to take part in key Holy Week observances.
“The government ought to have closed public schooling… to allow school children return to their families and be prepared to observe the Holy Week,” the statement said.
Intersociety also pointed out that teachers in the state civil service were affected, as they were unable to participate in important church activities, including services and other religious programmes associated with the period.
The organisation maintained that such decisions could have wider implications on religious freedom and cultural practices in a region where Christianity is predominant.
It urged the state government to adopt policies that take into account religious sensitivities and ensure that citizens are not constrained in observing their faith.
Attempts to get a response from the Anambra State Government were unsuccessful as of press time.
