The Labour Party (LP) has set April 23 as the new commencement date for its long-delayed congresses, with its national convention now scheduled for April 28 in Umuahia, Abia State, marking a decisive step in the party’s bid to reset its internal structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
The announcement, made by the party’s National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, on Arise Television yesterday, underscored what she described as a renewed commitment to unity, inclusiveness, and internal democracy following months of internal disagreements and restructuring efforts.
“We had to postpone it for about 20 days. We are starting on April 23… and our national convention is expected to be on April 28 in Umuahia by the grace of God.”
The choice of Umuahia is both symbolic and strategic, as the city hosts the administration of the party’s only serving governor, Alex Otti. Party leaders said the location reflects a celebration of progress while anchoring the event in a region where the party maintains its strongest political foothold.
“We have only one governor; he is doing well, so we want to have it in his city, where we will celebrate with him as well.”
The new timetable comes after the party postponed its ward, local council, and state congresses to allow for broader participation and resolve lingering internal tensions. According to Usman, the delay is part of a wider reconciliation process aimed at bringing all aggrieved members back to the fold.
“Our strength is in coming back together, making peace among ourselves. We are extending the olive branch… let’s work together and build our party.”
Political analysts view the updated convention timeline as a critical test of the party’s cohesion, following high-profile exits, including that of former Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, and ongoing legal disputes that have challenged its organisational stability. (The Guardian)
