The Enugu State Government has confirmed an outbreak of Rabies in Igbo Etiti Local Government Area, raising concerns over public health and animal safety.

In a public notice issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, residents were urged to adopt immediate precautionary measures to contain the spread of the disease.

Rabies, a viral infection that affects both animals and humans, is primarily transmitted through bites or saliva from infected animals, particularly dogs. Health authorities warned that once symptoms manifest, the disease is almost always fatal.

Reacting to the development, Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Patrick Nwabueze Ubru, called for calm while stressing the need for vigilance and swift response to prevent further transmission.

He urged dog owners to ensure prompt vaccination of their pets, describing it as the most effective method of controlling the outbreak.

The government also directed pet owners to restrain their animals and prevent them from roaming freely, noting that uncontrolled movement could accelerate the spread.

Residents were further advised to avoid contact with stray or unfamiliar animals, which may pose a high risk of infection.

Ubru added that any animal suspected of being infected—particularly those showing signs such as unusual aggression, excessive salivation, abnormal behaviour or paralysis—should be reported immediately to the nearest veterinary authority.

The notice also stressed the importance of seeking immediate medical attention in the event of a bite or scratch from any animal.

It advised victims to thoroughly wash the affected area with mild soap under running water for at least 10 minutes before proceeding to the nearest health facility for urgent care.

Community leaders and stakeholders across Igbo Etiti and neighboring areas have also been called upon to intensify awareness campaigns on the dangers of rabies and the importance of preventive measures.

The commissioner assured the public that the state government is working closely with relevant authorities to contain the outbreak and safeguard public health.

Residents were encouraged to report suspected cases and seek further information through the state veterinary services department under the ministry of agriculture and agro-industrialization.

The government reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and urged full cooperation from the public to effectively tackle the outbreak. (The Nation)
