Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori
Security operatives in Kano State have foiled a daring daytime cattle rustling attempt by armed bandits who reportedly stormed a border community with dozens of motorcycles, killing two suspects and recovering more than 500 stolen cows.
The operation, carried out by a joint team of security personnel and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF), prevented the attackers from escaping with a large herd of cattle after they invaded Tsauri town in Shanono Local Government Area.
Yahya Bagobiri, chairman of the Faruruwa Community Security Committee, disclosed the development during a telephone interview, praising the swift response of security agencies, particularly the police.
According to him, the bandits—riding about 150 motorcycles—entered the community in broad daylight and targeted a Fulani herder believed to own over 2,000 cows.
“The bandits stormed Tsauri town and attempted to rustle nearly all the cattle belonging to the herder, but they could not capture him,” Bagobiri said.
He explained that residents quickly alerted local security networks and neighbouring communities, including Goron Dutse, Shanono and Tsanyawa, while he personally contacted the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, to report the attack.
“Immediately we received the information, we informed security agencies and other nearby communities so they could remain vigilant,” he said. “I also called the Commissioner of Police, who promptly directed security operatives to respond.”
Bagobiri said the joint security team intercepted the bandits as they attempted to flee with the stolen cattle, with some of the rustlers pushing the animals toward the Katsina border while others tried to escape deeper into Kano territory.
Security operatives pursued the suspects, killing two of them during the confrontation and recovering about 500 cows from the rustlers.
Community members have commended the rapid intervention of the security agencies, noting that the prompt response helped avert a potentially devastating loss for local herders.
“We are extremely happy with the way the security agencies responded to our calls,” Bagobiri said. “Their quick action ensured that most of the cattle were recovered and prevented further damage.”
Cattle rustling and bandit attacks have remained a security concern in several communities across northern Nigeria, particularly in areas bordering states affected by banditry.
Local leaders say improved collaboration between residents and security agencies has begun to yield positive results in preventing attacks and protecting livelihoods in vulnerable rural communities. (BusinessDay)
