ADC National Chairman, Sen David Mark
Senator David Mark, National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has blamed widespread maladministration and economic mismanagement for the growing demand among Nigerians for a credible political alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mark made the remarks while receiving the report of the party’s Constitution Review Committee, emphasizing that a party’s constitution is more than a document as it represents the collective aspirations of members and underpins the party’s readiness to provide people-centered leadership.
“This marks an important milestone for the ADC. I receive, on behalf of the leadership and membership, the report of the Constitution Review Committee with deep appreciation and a sense of responsibility,” he said.
He commended the committee for its diligence, patriotism, and inclusive approach. “Constitutional review is never routine; it requires wisdom, inclusiveness, and foresight. Our party’s constitution is the soul of our collective aspirations. It defines who we are, what we stand for, and how we organize ourselves to serve Nigerians,” he added.
Represented by the party’s National Legal Adviser, Professor Osarehmni Osunbor SAN, Mark noted that the review reflects contemporary realities, strengthens internal democracy, and promotes transparency and accountability.
“I am particularly encouraged that this process involved wide consultations across states, zones, and critical stakeholders. It reinforces our belief that the ADC belongs to all members, irrespective of status or position,” he said.
Mark stressed that no constitution can substitute for discipline, loyalty, and commitment. “At this critical juncture, Nigerians are looking for credible alternatives—parties that are organized, principled, and people-oriented. The ADC must continue to position itself as that viable platform.”
Earlier, the Constitution Review Committee chairman, Etigwe Uwa SAN, explained that the review addressed innovations and departures from the original document. “This was not merely a party assignment, but a national one. We aimed to fashion a constitution that could serve as a model for others and address issues that have long plagued Nigeria’s political party system,” he said.
Uwa detailed the inclusive process, noting that submissions were received from party members, civil society groups, women’s associations, persons with disabilities, and even international organizations. “Every submission was carefully reviewed to strengthen ownership and confidence in the process,” he added.
He emphasized the crucial role political parties play in leadership selection, noting that a strong and functional party system is central to producing capable leaders and providing Nigerians with credible choices at the polls. (The Guardian)
