Some Nigerian private universities have secured notable positions in the 2026 global academic rankings, with Covenant University emerging as the highest-ranked institution in the country’s private university category.
According to the AD Scientific Index 2026 rankings, Covenant University, located in Ota, is ranked 1,857 globally, 36th in Africa, and 3rd in Nigeria.

1. Covenant University
Founded in 2002 by David Oyedepo, the university ranks 1,857 globally, 36th in Africa, and 3rd in Nigeria.
2. Afe Babalola University (ABUAD)
Situated in Ado-Ekiti, it was founded in 2009 by Afe Babalola. It ranks 2,631 globally, 112th in Africa, and 18th in Nigeria.
3. Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN)
Based in Kano and established in 2021, it ranks 2,948 globally, 131st in Africa, and 19th in Nigeria.
4. Redeemer’s University
Founded in 2005 by the Redeemed Christian Church of God, it ranks 3,007 globally, 136th in Africa, and 20th in Nigeria.
5. Bowen University
Located in Iwo and established in 2001 by the Nigerian Baptist Convention, it ranks 3,070 globally, 140th in Africa, and 21st in Nigeria.
6. Landmark University
Situated in Omu-Aran, it was founded in 2011 and ranks 3,121 globally, 143rd in Africa, and 22nd in Nigeria.
7. Babcock University
Located in Ilishan-Remo and owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, it ranks 3,605 globally, 180th in Africa, and 31st in Nigeria.
8. African University of Science and Technology
Founded in 2007 and based in Abuja, it ranks 4,177 globally, 205th in Africa, and 38th in Nigeria.
9. Bells University of Technology
Located in Ota and established in 2005, it ranks 4,690 globally, 234th in Africa, and 46th in Nigeria.
10. Augustine University
