The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has expressed concern over growing public distrust in Nigeria’s electoral system, urging comprehensive reforms to restore citizens’ confidence.
The Acting State Director of NOA, Ifeoma Chijioke, made the call at a regional conference on information narratives for the 2027 elections in Southeast Nigeria. The event was organised by the Centre for Democracy and Development with support from the National Democratic Institute.
Chijioke emphasised the need for a transparent and efficient transmission of election results, describing it as critical to rebuilding credibility ahead of the 2027 general elections.
She urged citizens not to abandon the democratic process, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to mobilising voter registration and participation across the country.
The NOA official also advocated the reintroduction of accountability and stewardship forums, where elected officials regularly present their performance to constituents.
According to her, the absence of such platforms has deepened the disconnect between leaders and the electorate, contributing to declining trust in the electoral system.
“People have lost confidence in the country’s elections. We need extra efforts and commitment to make them believe in the system again,” she said.
Chairman of the International Peace and Civic Responsibility Centre (IPCRC), Prince Chris Azor underscored the place of civic engagement, noting that the path to functional democracy required collective effort to strengthen institutions.
Earlier, Director of the Centre for Democracy and Development, Dr. Dauda Garuba, said the conference was convened to assess how information narratives shaped the 2025 Anambra governorship election and to develop strategies against misinformation, disinformation, and political polarisation.
Garuba, represented by election consultant Chibuike Mgbeahuruike noted that the meeting also aimed to strengthen electoral resilience, promote civic engagement, and tackle voter apathy across the Southeast.
“This meeting is also aimed at strengthening electoral management and system resilience as well as fostering civic engagement and address electoral apathy.
“The 2025 Anambra governorship election presented numerous challenges, including the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech.
“As a leading organization committed to democratic governance, CDD, with NDI’s support, monitored these trends to inform our work and contribute to electoral integrity,” he added. (The Nation)
