The Northern Progressive Agenda (NPA) has raised alarm over what it described as the weakening of Nigeria’s democratic institutions, warning that the trend poses grave risks to the stability, unity, and prosperity of Northern Nigeria.
In a statement signed by its National Secretary, Hon. Idris Ibrahim Kalgo, the group noted that the region is grappling with multiple challenges, including insecurity, economic strain, social fragmentation, and declining public trust. It stressed that democracy remains the most critical safeguard against these threats.
“The North has always played a defining role in shaping Nigeria’s political and moral direction. Today, that responsibility calls for renewed clarity of purpose and unity of action,” the statement read.
The NPA urged progressive leaders across Northern Nigeria, irrespective of political affiliation, to rise above division and work collaboratively in the interest of the region. It also called on aspirants and stakeholders within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other parties to embrace unity, discipline, and a shared vision capable of inspiring public confidence.

The group further appealed to youth, women, and civil society actors to actively engage in the democratic process, ensuring their voices shape the future they deserve. Public institutions, it added, must uphold the rule of law, fairness, and constitutional order without fear or favour.
“This is not merely a political moment, it is a generational responsibility,” Kalgo added.
According to the statement, the NPA is committed to convening thought leaders, policymakers, and emerging voices to develop practical solutions that address insecurity, rebuild trust, and unlock the immense potential of the region.
The group outlined its vision of a Northern Nigeria that is united in purpose, secure in reality, prosperous in opportunity, and progressive in outlook. “The time to act is now. Through unity, courage, and strategic collaboration, we can strengthen democracy and build a future worthy of our shared heritage and aspirations,” the statement added. (Dailytrust)
