The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended the member representing Obubra I State Constituency, Agbor Ovat Dickson, indefinitely over allegations of domestic violence.

The decision followed deliberations on a matter of urgent public importance raised on the floor of the House by the Deputy Leader of the 10th Assembly and member representing Abi State Constituency, Davies Etta.

Etta drew the attention of lawmakers to reports circulating on social media alleging that Dickson assaulted his wife in a recent incident that has generated widespread public concern.

Moving the motion, Etta said the development had cast the Assembly in a negative light, stressing that legislators, who bear the title “honourable,” must uphold high standards of conduct both in public and private life.

He condemned the alleged act and noted that the 10th Assembly had been widely commended for its legislative performance, including the passage of several bills, motions, and resolutions.

After deliberations, the House resolved to suspend Dickson indefinitely pending the outcome of an investigation, while a seven-member special committee was constituted to probe the matter.

The Leader of the House, Francis Bassey Asuquo, underscored the need for strict adherence to the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law, earlier passed by the Assembly, reaffirming the legislature’s commitment to safeguarding citizens’ rights.

In his contribution, the Chief Whip, Hillary Bisong (Boki II), said the alleged conduct fell below the ethical standards and privileges expected of members of the legislature.

Speaker of the Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, expressed concern over the reputational implications of the allegation, noting that the integrity of the House was at stake.

He directed the committee to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation and submit its report within the stipulated timeframe. (Guardian)
