A yet-to-be-identified young man was killed by a mob on Wednesday morning after he allegedly disrupted traffic along the FMC–OSAMCA corridor of the Idi-Aba–Kemta–OGTV road in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
Witnesses said the man, who held heavy metal objects in both hands, blocked one lane of the four-lane carriageway at about 10:20 a.m., forcing motorists to a halt and threatening anyone who attempted to drive past.
The action reportedly led to a gridlock that lasted nearly 30 minutes, as motorists and pedestrians remained stranded amid fears for their safety.
Distress calls were said to have been placed to the Kemta Division of the Nigeria Police Force for intervention. However, before officers arrived, some youths in the area reportedly mobilised and confronted the man, striking him repeatedly with wooden objects.
By the time security operatives reached the scene, the man had been overpowered and was lying unconscious on the ground. Despite the arrival of the police, members of the crowd continued to assault him after he was removed from the road to ease the traffic congestion.
Authorities have yet to confirm the identity of the deceased or provide further details on the incident. (The Nation)
