As African economies continue to expand and diversify, income levels across the continent remain uneven. Variations in industrial output, labour market development, foreign investment, and cost of living continue to shape what workers earn each month.
Although average salary figures do not fully capture living standards—particularly in countries with wide income gaps—they remain a useful indicator for comparing earning power across national economies.
Based on the most recent 2026 salary data, here are the five African countries with the highest average monthly earnings, presented in U.S. dollars.
1. Morocco – Approximately $2,100 per month
Morocco leads the continent in average monthly earnings in 2026, with workers earning about $2,100 per month. The country’s diversified economic base—spanning manufacturing, agriculture, automotive exports, renewable energy, and services—has helped sustain steady wage growth. Strategic trade partnerships with Europe and continued industrial expansion have reinforced its competitive pay levels.
2. South Africa – Approximately $1,900 per month
South Africa follows closely, with average monthly salaries estimated at $1,900. As one of Africa’s most industrialised economies, the country benefits from a mature financial sector, a strong mining industry, and a growing technology ecosystem. Its extensive formal workforce and established corporate infrastructure continue to support relatively higher wage benchmarks.
3. Tunisia – Approximately $1,600 per month
In North Africa, Tunisia records average monthly earnings of about $1,600. The economy draws strength from manufacturing, tourism, agriculture, and public sector employment. Despite recent fiscal pressures, Tunisia maintains comparatively solid wage structures within the region.
4. Kenya – Approximately $1,400 per month
Kenya ranks fourth, with workers earning roughly $1,400 monthly on average. As East Africa’s largest economy, Kenya has seen sustained growth in financial services, telecommunications, and digital innovation. The rise of Nairobi as a regional technology and start-up hub has contributed to higher incomes, particularly in skilled and tech-driven sectors.
5. Algeria – Approximately $1,300 per month
Rounding out the list is Algeria, where average monthly salaries stand at approximately $1,300. The country’s oil and gas sector remains the backbone of the economy, underpinning government revenues and supporting significant public sector employment, which continues to influence national wage levels.
