A middle-aged man identified as Sunny Uma Okwara was recently flogged publicly with 30 strokes of the cane by angry women in Ohafia, Abia State for allegedly assaulting his aged mother.

A video of the incident seen by News Express shows Okwara lying face-down on the ground in the presence of the village women and some male onlookers who hailed the women’s action, even as Okwara pleaded in vain for mercy.

According to the voices in the video, Okwara had severally assaulted his over 70 years old mother until recently when the village women (locally known as Umuada) took it upon themselves to discipline him.

The leader of the women in wrapper and white canvas with cane in hand after hailing the village women started flogging Okwara on his bottom on the prompting of a man who briefly narrated his sins.

While he was being flogged, the onlookers were counting as another woman with a cane helped with the flogging.

Commenting on the traditional punishment, one observer said: “I am sure he has learned his lesson and will not do it again.”
