Gov Soludo and the newly elected traditional rulers in Anambra State
Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has presented certificates of recognition to six newly elected traditional rulers in Anambra State.
The monarchs include Igwe Justice Samuel Nwachukwu Okoye (Azigbo community, Nnewi South LGA), Igwe Clement Nchetaka Onwuka (Isulo community, Orumba South LGA), and Igwe Uche Sunday Okonkwo (Amawbia community, Awka South LGA).
Others are Igwe Benson Chinedu Madubuko (Adazi-Ani community, Anaocha LGA), Igwe Ejike Ugoagbala (Ora-Eri community, Aguata LGA) and Igwe Sir Ben Chibuzor Okekeifi (Ndiowu community, Orumba North LGA).
Presenting the certificates at the Light House, Awka, on Friday, Governor Soludo stressed that the office of the traditional ruler is created by the town union constitutions in most communities, which define the responsibilities of the traditional rulers. He tasked the monarchs to abide by these rules to avoid the usual issues that arise between traditional rulers and Presidents-General.
He urged them to be the light and father of all, and asked the communities to take ownership of and maintain the traditional institution in their areas.
The Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Mr Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne, stated that their emergence followed the constitutions of their respective communities before being presented to the Governor.
He added that the PPCP model is now working, as some of them have contributed immensely to their various communities, and that other states are now learning from and borrowing from the state, especially the amended local government laws.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers’ Council, Igwe Chidubem Iweka, expressed optimism that the traditional rulers are tested and trusted, which implies that there will be less rancour, animosity and chaos in the communities, pledging the support of the Council.
In separate interviews with newsmen, the traditional ruler of Azigbo community in Nnewi South Council Area, Igwe Justice Samuel Nwachukwu Okoye, and the traditional ruler of Amawbia community, Awka South Council Area, Igwe Uche Sunday Okonkwo, commended Governor Soludo, the State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and their various communities for finding them worthy of the position.
They promised to discharge their responsibilities on the principles of justice, fairness and equity.
Other dignitaries present at the event included the Deputy Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Chukwuma Pius Okoye; the State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne; and the State Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor. (Nigerian Tribune)
