The Lagos State Government has repeatedly reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on indiscriminate waste disposal and markets that flout environmental regulations.
It has continually warned residents, communities, markets, and private businesses to adhere to the provisions of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017 against illegal waste disposal on roads, medians, and highways.
Despite these repeated calls, some still openly disregard the rules. As part of its measures to ensure compliance with the state’s environmental laws, it never hesitates to seal markets that flout them.
On Sunday, the state’s commissioner for environment, Tokunbo Wahab, announced that the popular Ladipo Spare Parts Market along Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road (Apapa–Oshodi Expressway) has been sealed over repeated environmental infractions; indiscriminate refuse disposal on the median/highway and illegal street trading.
But this is not the first time the Ladipo Spare Parts Market has been sealed for this reason. It had also been sealed in 2023 over similar environmental infractions.
The Ladipo Spare Parts Market is not the only Lagos market that has been closed over this issue. Many other markets in Lagos have suffered similar fates in the past.
Below is a list of markets in Lagos that have been sealed in the past for flouting the state’s waste management law.
