Popular Twitch streamer and internet personality Kai Cenat has returned to Lagos, Nigeria, marking his second visit amid renewed attention on his long-promised Makoko Children School and Orphanage Home.
Cenat arrived at Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Wednesday, greeted by a live band performance, sparking excitement across social media platforms.
Nearly a year after his first Nigerian visit during which he pledged $5 million to build a school for children in Makoko, a waterfront community nicknamed Lagos’ “floating slum” progress on the initiative faced delays. Challenges included land acquisition, regulatory approvals, and adapting plans for the area’s unique floating structures. The school’s construction site was later moved to Yaba, a more stable location, while Cenat affirmed that Makoko children would still receive free education once the school opens.
During Mafiathon 3, Cenat revealed that over $1 million had already been raised for the project. He outlined phased spending plans and long-term sustainability goals, emphasizing the importance of creating an institution built to last rather than rushing construction.
Cenat’s return has reignited excitement among Nigerian fans, many hoping his visit signals fresh momentum for the project. Meanwhile, some social media users remain skeptical, calling for visible progress and clearer timelines.
The visit coincides with growing international interest in Nigeria from global content creators. Fellow American streamer IShowSpeed visited Lagos just two weeks prior, drawing massive crowds and highlighting the country’s rising influence in global digital culture.
Cenat’s engagement included meeting Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, visiting the school site, donating supplies, and celebrating the grand opening of Makoko Children School. Social media clips show Cenat interacting with excited students, shaking hands with the governor, and sharing his admiration for Lagos’ culture and energy.
“I love coming here. From the moment I landed, the love is crazy. It’s the first country where I’ve felt a different type of love,” Cenat said during his visit.
The school is now fully named Makoko Children School and Orphanage Home, offering free education to its students. Cenat has largely stepped back from streaming to focus on launching his fashion brand, VIVET, while continuing to champion educational initiatives in Nigeria. (Arise News)
