Elder statesman, Amb Yemi Farounbi
A retired Customs officer, Elder Emmanuel Titilayo Owolabi, who was kidnapped in his hometown, Ora-Igbomina, in Ifedayo Local Government Area of Osun State over four weeks ago by armed bandits, has reportedly regained his freedom from his abductors.
It will be recalled that the ex-Customs officer was initially asked to pay N200 million while in the kidnappers’ den.
However, whether the family of the kidnapped victim paid the N200 million ransom demanded by the abductors or negotiated a reduction before he regained his freedom remains unclear as of the time of filing this report.
His release was announced by a media icon and former Ambassador to the Philippines, Ambassador Yemi Farounbi, OON, the Asiwaju of Ora-Igbomina.
The veteran journalist, in a press statement issued on behalf of the community, expressed gratitude to God for the safe return of the elder statesman, describing him as a patriot and a worthy senior citizen.
The community also appreciated the Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, and the state government for their support and assistance throughout the period of captivity, while expressing confidence that the government would continue to strengthen security and expand government presence, particularly in the boundary areas of the state.
Commendation was extended to the Police, the Military and other security and intelligence agencies for their efforts and sacrifices in safeguarding lives and property across the country.
Ora-Igbomina residents further acknowledged the role of both the mass and social media in bringing the incident to national attention despite the community’s remote location.
Traditional rulers in Ifedayo Local Government Area were also praised, particularly the Orangun and the Asaoni, for their concern, support and intervention. The statement emphasised that unity remains the community’s greatest strength.
The Akesin, chiefs, pastors, imams and citizens of Ora-Igbomina were equally commended for their prayers, solidarity and collective efforts during the difficult period.
The statement concluded with a call for continued unity and self-reliance, stressing that community cooperation remains essential in addressing shared challenges. (Saturday Tribune)
