Several Gurasa (local bread) bakeries in seven quarters across Dala local government area in Kano city, have been burnt down by suspected thugs.
The ugly incident took place midnight on Tuesday, extending to the early hours of Wednesday.
However, no life was lost in the attack that took place in Dala, Rijya Biyu, Aikawa, Dukurawa, Shatsari and Kabawa Quarters all within Kano City.
The attack was confirmed by the District Head of Arewa in Dala local government area, Farouk Muhammad Yola, who described it as unfortunate, saying it is linked to drug abuse by the thugs.
“I will start by seeking God’s protection from the overwhelming situations showing their ugly faces in recent times, especially the issue of youths engaging in drugs and thuggery.
“This unfortunate incident started from Rijiya Biyu Quarters and extended through the other quarters up to Dukawa where several gurasa bakeries were set ablaze,” he stated.
He also suspected that the thugs in their numbers deliberately set the places on fire to distract the people of the communities and engage in theft. However, no theft incident has been reported during the incident.
The thugs also vandalised a vehicle belonging to a resident and also set ablaze part of the residence of Rijiya Biyu Ward Head.
Also confirming the fire in the affected places, the Kano State Fire Service, explained that the agency responded to distress call around 11.30pm Tuesday night.
Addressing newsmen, the Public Relations Officer of the Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, explained that they were able to control the fire in which bunches of sticks used in the bakeries were set ablaze.
“What we could do was limited because of the circumstance. We require police protection during such kind of work due to the nature of those involved.
“However, we were able to stop the fire from escalating when we go to the place,” he explained.
He called on community members to ensure they expose the bad eggs among them while calling on the authorities to ensure that those guilty are duly punished to serve as deterrent to others. (Blueprint)
