The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has raised concerns that several Federal Government ministries, departments and agencies are sidelining indigenous engineers in major projects running into trillions of naira, in violation of the Federal Government’s Nigeria First Policy.

The 35th President of the Society, Engr. Ali Alimasuya Rabiu, disclosed this in his inaugural address during investiture ceremony held in Abuja.

Rabiu expressed support for the Nigeria First Policy, describing it as a historic opportunity to reposition Nigeria as Africa’s infrastructure and industrial hub.

He, however, lamented that despite existing legal frameworks such as the COREN Act and Executive Order 5, many government projects still exclude Nigerian engineers.

“It may shock Mr. President to know that MDAs, especially infrastructure-related Ministries such as the Federal Ministries of Works, Power, Water Resources, and the Federal Capital Territory Administration, have largely observed these laws in the breach.

“Projects running into trillions of naira are being executed across Nigeria, both by the Federal Government and the State Governments, without the

involvement of Nigerian engineering professionals,” he said.

Rabiu warned that weak enforcement of existing regulations has resulted in poor project delivery and inflated costs.

He urged the President to mandate the compulsory engagement of Nigerian engineering consultants in the design, supervision and certification of all major projects nationwide.

The NSE President also commended the immediate past President of the Society, Engr. Margaret Oguntala, for restoring visibility and professionalism to the organisation.

He noted that the next phase of the Society’s leadership must focus on firmly aligning engineering practice with national priorities and public policy objectives.

Reflecting on his tenure as a former President of COREN, Rabiu said his return to leadership was motivated by concerns that the Society had drifted from its founding ideals.

He pledged to rebuild the NSE into a standards-driven and ideas-led institution capable of shaping policy, driving innovation and delivering tangible value to its members and the nation. (Daily Trust)
