Airbus Helicopters has confirmed that it has been awarded a contract by Ghana’s Ministry of Defence for the supply of four helicopters, marking a significant upgrade to the country’s rotary-wing capabilities.
The deal covers two H175M multi-mission helicopters, alongside one ACH175 and one ACH160 corporate transport helicopter under the Airbus Corporate Helicopters (ACH) brand.
Arnaud Montalvo, Head of Africa and the Middle East at Airbus Helicopters, said the deal marks the company’s return to Ghana with a strong focus on customer support and long-term partnership.
“We are particularly excited that the H175M will be operated in Ghana, showcasing the aircraft’s versatility across defence and security missions. This key agreement also positions Ghana as a leading customer in West Africa for our premium corporate helicopters, the ACH160 and ACH175,” he added.
According to Airbus, the H175M platforms will be deployed across a wide range of operational roles, including troop and personnel transport, search and rescue, emergency medical services, and disaster relief.
Designed as a militarised variant of the H175, the H175M is a versatile aircraft capable of operating in demanding environments while supporting both security and humanitarian missions.
The ACH160 is widely regarded as the world’s most technologically advanced helicopter, combining state-of-the-art avionics, superior performance, and a spacious, customizable cabin.
Its Helionix flight deck enhances safety and situational awareness, while advanced engines, low-vibration rotor systems, and high-end comfort make it ideal for VVIP transport and government missions.
The helicopter’s versatility, reliability, and cutting-edge design give Ghana a significant upgrade in both executive transport and operational air capability.
For Ghana, which regularly deploys its armed forces for internal security, regional peacekeeping, and disaster response, the addition of these helicopters is expected to significantly enhance operational reach and rapid-response capabilities.
With the new acquisition, Ghana aims to replace its aging helicopter fleet, a move prompted by the tragic crash of a Z9 helicopter in August last year resulting in the deaths of several top government officials.
The ACH175 and ACH160 will be configured for VVIP and government transport duties. As part of Airbus Corporate Helicopters’ premium lineup, both models are tailored for executive travel, combining long-range performance with enhanced cabin comfort.
Their inclusion indicates a dual-use approach by Ghana’s Ministry of Defence, balancing frontline operational needs with secure, reliable transport for senior officials. (Business Insider Africa)
