Former governor of Enugu, Okwesilieze Nwodo
Former governor of Enugu, Okwesilieze Nwodo, has attributed the South-East’s rejection of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to what he described as years of hardship and perceived oppression under successive APC-led administrations.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday, Nwodo said the eight years of former President Muhammadu Buhari, as well as the current administration of President Bola Tinubu, had been particularly difficult for people of the region, making the ruling party unattractive to them.
He explained that the APC has struggled to gain acceptance in the South-East because it is widely viewed as a party that singles out the region for unfair treatment, a perception that has persisted despite some political leaders from the zone aligning with the party.
According to Nwodo, the Buhari’s administration was harsh on the South-East, adding that conditions under President Tinubu have become even more challenging.
“Unfortunately, since APC was formed in the South-East, it has never taken root. It has been seen as the government, or the party that singles out the South-East for oppression,” he said.
“Eight years of Buhari was quite difficult for our people, and the two and a half years of President Bola Tinubu have been even more difficult for our people.
“So naturally, they don’t gravitate towards APC. Our leaders may go there for reasons best known to them, but I can tell you they are not speaking for the general public,” he added. (TRIBUNE)
