The late Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, former Premier of the defunct Western Nigeria
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, are among the dignitaries expected at the 60th remembrance anniversary of the late Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, former Premier of the defunct Western Nigeria.
The event is scheduled for Thursday, January 29, 2026, at the University of Ibadan International Conference Centre (UI ICC), with Governor Makinde delivering the keynote address alongside former Nigerian Ambassador to Germany, Prof. Akinjide Osuntokun.
In a statement jointly issued by the Coordinator of the S. L. Akintola Foundation, Yemi Adedokun, and the Public Relations Officer, Remi Oladoye, the foundation noted that President Tinubu, South-West governors, and other invited governors from across the country will serve as Special Guests of Honour.
Oba Ladoja will chair the occasion, while Chief (Amb.) Abayomi Akintola, Dr. Abimbola Akintola, and Justice Ladiran Akintola will serve as chief hosts.
According to the foundation, the anniversary will provide an opportunity to reflect on Chief Akintola’s legacy, his political philosophy, and his contributions to the development of the Western Region and Nigeria.
The commemoration seeks to reassess his role in the region’s political evolution and his influence on national affairs.
Akintola, who served as the second and last Premier of Nigeria’s Western Region, was a distinguished lawyer, journalist, orator, and statesman. He was also the 13th Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland. He was assassinated during Nigeria’s first military coup on January 15, 1966. (The Nation)
