Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued 13 persons alive and recovered 27 bodies following a boat mishap in Nguru Local Government Area of Yobe.

A credible military source made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.

The source said the incident occurred at about 12:15 a.m. on Jan. 4, when a local boat ferrying 40 traders from Adiani village in Jigawa to a market in Nguru capsized in the Garbi riverine area.

According to him, troops of 241 Battalion, in collaboration with other security agencies and local divers, immediately mobilised to the scene and provided emergency support.

“The combined search and rescue effort led to the successful rescue of 13 victims alive, while 27 dead bodies were recovered from the river,” he said.

The source added that arrangements were underway for the burial of the deceased in accordance with Islamic rites, while relevant authorities were taking further necessary actions.

He noted that troops’ morale and fighting efficiency remained satisfactory, reaffirming their commitment to supporting civil authorities and responding promptly to emergencies within their area of responsibility.

NAN reports that riverine accidents remain a recurring challenge in parts of the country, often linked to night travel, overloading, and poor safety measures. (NAN)
