As more Nigerians require a Tax Identification Number (TIN) for banking, employment, business registration and access to government services, the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has simplified the process by allowing individuals to retrieve their Tax ID using their National Identification Number (NIN).
The service, which is free and fully online, enables applicants to obtain their Tax ID within minutes, provided their personal details align with records held by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
Requirements
Before accessing the portal, applicants are advised to have their 11-digit NIN, ensure the correct spelling of their first and last names, confirm their date of birth as registered with NIMC, and secure internet access on a phone or computer. All details entered must match NIN records exactly for successful verification.
How to Obtain a Tax ID
1. To begin the process, individuals are required to visit the official FIRS Tax ID portal at https://taxid.firs.gov.ng/
2. On the homepage, users should select the “Individual” option and choose NIN as the Tax ID retrieval method.
3. After entering the 11-digit NIN, applicants are required to click on “Retrieve Tax ID.”
4. The system will then prompt users to provide additional personal details, including their first name, last name and date of birth, exactly as captured in NIMC records.
5. Applicants must also give consent for identity verification by ticking the designated checkbox.
6. Once the information is submitted, the portal automatically verifies the details. If the data matches FIRS records, a confirmation message is displayed and the applicant’s Tax ID appears on the screen.
7. Users are advised to copy or save the number for future reference, as the Tax ID is required for various financial and official transactions.
The initiative is part of ongoing efforts by tax authorities to improve digital access to services and reduce the need for physical visits to tax offices across the country. (Nigerian Tribune)
