President Tinubu
By BONIFACE AKARAH
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Tuesday afternoon, December 30, 2025, broke his silence on allegations that the recently enacted tax laws had been altered, assuring Nigerians that the January 1, 2026, commencement of the reforms would proceed as planned.
In a statement personally signed by him, the President described the tax reforms—including those that took effect on June 26, 2025, and the remaining acts scheduled to start in January 2026—as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a fair, competitive, and robust fiscal foundation” for the country.
“These reforms are not designed to raise taxes,” Tinubu said. “They are intended to support a structural reset, drive harmonisation, and protect dignity while strengthening the social contract.”
The President urged all stakeholders to support the implementation phase, which he said is “now firmly in the delivery stage,” while addressing public concerns over alleged changes to provisions of the laws. He noted that no substantial issue has been identified that would warrant disruption of the reform process.
“Absolute trust is built over time through making the right decisions, not through premature, reactive measures,” Tinubu added.
He further reiterated his administration’s commitment to due process and the integrity of enacted laws, promising collaboration with the National Assembly to resolve any issues that may arise. “The Federal Government will continue to act in the overriding public interest to ensure a tax system that supports prosperity and shared responsibility,” the President said.
