Senator Gilbert Nnaji
Former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Communications, Senator Gilbert Nnaji, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after 27 years, citing what he described as the party’s irreversible decline from its founding ideals.
In a resignation letter dated 26 December 2025 and addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Umuenwene Ward, Iji Nike, Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, Senator Nnaji said the decision was difficult but unavoidable.
“I respectfully inform you of my decision to resign my membership of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, after 27 years,” the former lawmaker stated.
He recalled that the PDP was founded on “core democratic ideals driven by unity, patriotism, justice, fairness, transparency, selflessness, mutual respect, and resilience,” adding that the party once held great promise for Nigeria’s national development.
Senator Nnaji noted that he had served the party with dedication over the years, stressing that his contributions to the PDP were verifiable.
“Over the years, and in various capacities, I was not only faithfully committed but also made immense contributions and added tremendous value to this once-largest party in Africa,” he said.
However, he lamented that recent developments within the party showed that it had strayed beyond redemption.
The former senator disclosed that after wide consultations with his family, associates and other eminent Nigerians, he resolved to seek a new political platform to pursue his vision for the country.
Senator Nnaji announced that he has joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the party as a credible alternative.
“For the record, I have found in the African Democratic Congress, ADC, a veritable and promising ground with great and motivated like-minded compatriots to join forces in redirecting the ship of our Nigerian state,” he said.
He wished the PDP and its leadership well, while thanking them for their understanding.
Senator Nnaji represented Enugu East Senatorial District in the National Assembly and is a prominent political figure in Enugu State and beyond. (The Sun)
