Morocco is reportedly considering a bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations, according to reports, as the country continues to invest heavily in football infrastructure and prove its ability to stage major continental tournaments.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has recently announced that the AFCON will move to a four-year cycle starting in 2028. The next host will therefore carry added importance, with the 2028 tournament being the first staged under the new format.
Morocco is currently hosting the 2025 AFCON, and the tournament has drawn widespread praise from teams, players and fans for its smooth organization, modern stadiums, and efficient transport links, reinforcing the country’s reputation for delivering high-level football events.
Matches at AFCON 2025 are being played across a network of upgraded venues, many of which form part of Morocco’s broader stadium modernization program. Those investments are part of a longer-term strategy that extends beyond a single tournament.
A central pillar of that plan is the Hassan II Stadium, scheduled for completion in 2028. The Casablanca-based arena is designed to hold up to 115,000 spectators, which would make it the largest football stadium in the world once completed.
Beyond stadium development, Morocco has expanded its transport and tourism infrastructure in recent years. Airports have been modernized, high-speed rail links extended and significant investment made in hotels and hospitality, particularly in cities such as Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech and Tangier.
“It’s not dreaming, we have legitimate ambitions,” federation president Fouzi Lekjaa told L’Équipe recently.
Today, according to reports from Soccer 212, Morocco is considering submitting a bid to host AFCON 2028, although no official announcement has been made.
Competition for the tournament is expected to be strong. South Africa, Egypt, and potentially Algeria all have the infrastructure required to stage the event, while the principle of rotation could also play a role in CAF’s final decision.
AFCON 2027 has already been awarded to Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The 2028 edition, confirmed only recently after 2029 had previously been viewed as the likely option, will be the final tournament before the competition transitions fully to a four-year cycle.
CAF is expected to outline its bidding process after the end of AFCON 2025, with Morocco’s current hosting likely to form an important part of that assessment. (Moroccoworldnews)
