By VICTOR NWACHUKWU
The remains of Late Pa Edward Diogu, the father of former Nigeria’s national basketball team captain, Ike Diogu, have been laid to rest in Imo.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Pa Diogu was buried in his country home, Umuezeduru, Amauzari in Isiala-Mbano council area of Imo, on Saturday.
He passed away in August 2025 after a prolonged illness, aged 82.
Speaking to newsmen shortly after the burial, Ike Diogu described his late father as “an honourable man of peace who left a beautiful legacy “.
He thanked the Imo Government, his townsmen and the basketball community in Nigeria for their immense support during the trying time.
First son of the deceased, Mr Edward Diogu Jnr, promised to honour his father’s legacy of peacemaking and community service by attracting infrastructural development to the Amauzari community and creating jobs.
“An era ended today and a new one began. I promise to honour my father’s legacy and ensure that our land prospers”, he said.
Widow of Late Pa Diogu, Mrs Jane Diogu, eulogised her late husband, describing him as “a cherished man of valour”.
“I thank my husband for giving me 49 good years of love, kindness, care and teaching, and I pray that he continues to rest in the bosom of the Lord “.
Also speaking, the Imo Commissioner for Sports, Mr Evaristus Onyeocha, who represented Gov. Hope Uzodinma, described Ike Diogu as one of Nigeria’s finest and a living legend, hence the government’s support for him during his moment of bereavement.
“On behalf of the state government and the sports family in Imo, I condole with the Diogu family and I wish to say that we are happy with Ike for always making Imo proud,” he said.
NAN reports that Ike Diogu proudly captained Nigeria during a distinguished international career that saw him compete across the NBA, Europe, Asia, and international tournaments. (NAN)
