Gov Mutfwang of Plateau State
Governor Caleb Mutfwang has moved to douse speculations surrounding his political future, making it clear that any decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) will be done openly, transparently, and through due process — not through the backdoor.
The Plateau State governor, on Thursday, met with his aides and key political loyalists, where he formally briefed them on ongoing consultations regarding his political alignment amid growing rumours of an imminent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The meeting, it was gathered, was aimed at carrying stakeholders along and preventing misinformation, rather than announcing a completed defection.
Speaking to the Sun correspondent, the Governor’s Political Adviser, Mr Istifanus Mwansat, categorically dismissed claims that Governor Mutfwang had already defected to the APC.
“The governor has not defected to the APC,” Mwansat said. “He remains a card-carrying member of the PDP.”
He stressed that the governor is fully aware of the constitutional and political requirements for changing party affiliation and will not circumvent them.
“For him to move to the APC, he must formally resign from the PDP and register as a member of the APC in his ward before any defection can be said to have taken place,” he explained.
Mwansat added that none of those steps has been taken, noting that Thursday’s meeting was strictly a briefing of aides and loyalists on the state of consultations and political realities.
“What must be clearly understood,” he said, “is that Governor Mutfwang cannot and will not move to the APC through the backdoor. If and when he makes that decision, it will be done openly and through the appropriate channels.”
The clarification comes amid heightened political tension and intense speculation in Plateau State, with observers closely watching the governor’s next move as the 2027 political permutations begin to take shape.
