Nelson Ahamefula Akuma, ADC Chieftain
A chieftain of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nelson Ahamefula Akuma, has described as shameful and disappointing, the presidency’s admittance of their inability to track bandits.
Recall that president Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, had in an interview, said that many of the bandits, terrorists, and kidnappers rely on foreign based internet providers, thereby making it extremely difficult for law enforcement agencies to monitor or track their activities.
Speaking while reacting to the interview, Akuma said that what it means is that Nigerians should lose hope of protection from the government of the day.
However, he commended Daniel Bwala for the revelation, adding that for years now, government has been telling Nigerians that they are on top of the security situation in Nigeria.
According to him, in many of his interviews he had granted, he had stated that the challenge of tackling insecurity in Tinubu’s government is more of lack of capacity than political will.
He said that since government has decided to tell Nigerians the truth of their lack of capacity, they should ask for external help.
Speaking further, he said that bandits and terrorists are using internet services that are outside Nigeria regulatory reach should not be the reason life should be brutish and short.
According to him, Tinubu’s government should know that it is in office to solve problems and not to give excuses.
“Every office comes with responsibilities. If you are the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of a country, your major responsibility is protecting the lives and properties of your citizens and not to be giving them excuses. Insecurity, like a fog has stealthily enveloped the whole country and what we are getting from this government is excuses of why they can’t track the bandits and terrorists. In 2014, Bola Tinubu as the National Leader of APC called on the then president Goodluck Jonathan to resign if he cannot tackle the insecurity in the country then but today, we have a worse form of insecurity to the extent that states have closed down schools but nobody is talking of resignation. So, for me, he should seek foreign collaboration to at least reduce the insecurity in the country. There is no way we can continue like this as a people,” Akuma said.
He said that if the presidency can implement what the United State Congress advised them, such as disarming the bandits, the insecurity would reduce.
