The Akwa Ibom House of Assembly
The Akwa Ibom House of Assembly has rejected a motion seeking to prohibit the sale and consumption of dog meat in the state.
The motion, sponsored by Uduak Ekpoufot, member representing Etinan State Constituency, failed during plenary on Tuesday after it received no seconder, a procedural requirement for legislative debate.
According to Essien Nduese, media aide to Governor Umo Eno, the details of Tuesday’s plenary were shared on Facebook.
Mr. Ekpoufot had urged the House to consider the public health risks associated with dog meat consumption, warning that unhygienic slaughter practices could expose consumers to rabies, salmonella, trichinella, and other pathogens. He also criticised the inhumane methods used in the trade.
Despite these concerns, no lawmaker supported the motion, prompting the Speaker to declare it rejected. With the motion’s collapse, dog meat consumption in Akwa Ibom remains unregulated. (AriseNewsTV)
