Albinism Network Association has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the rights and inclusion of PWDs in Nigeria.
The group also pledged to continue to work with government agencies, civil society organizations, and international partners to ensure that Nigeria becomes a more inclusive society for all.
This is coming as Nigeria joins the global community to commemorate the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
This year’s theme is, ‘Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress,’ resonates deeply with our mission to promote the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities in Nigeria.
This was contained in a statement issued by Ambassador Muyiwa Abegunde, Executive Lead Albinism Network Association.
Part of the statement reads: “As we mark this important day, we recognize the significant challenges faced by PWDs in Nigeria, including social exclusion, lack of access to education and employment, and inadequate healthcare.
“Despite the enactment of the 2019 Disability Act, implementation remains a major concern. Regrettably, most interventions for PWDs in Nigeria are supported by the international community rather than the Nigerian government.
“We urge the Nigerian government to take concrete steps to implement the Disability Act, ensuring that PWDs have equal access to opportunities and services. Key areas of focus should include:
“Accessibility: Ensure public infrastructure, transportation, and digital services are accessible to all.
- Education and Employment: Provide inclusive education and job opportunities to empower PWDs.
- Healthcare: Strengthen healthcare services to meet the unique needs of PWDs.
“Data Collection: Collect disaggregated data to inform policy and program development. We also call on the government to increase budgetary allocations to support PWDs and disability organizations and to establish a commission in Geopolitical Zone to oversee implementation of the Disability Act.
“As we celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting the rights and inclusion of PWDs in Nigeria.
“We will continue to work with government agencies, civil society organizations, and international partners to ensure that Nigeria becomes a more inclusive society for all.”
