Rahamat Mohammed, a two-year-old toddler at the centre of a high-profile child trafficking case, is now safely in police custody.
In a significant breakthrough against child trafficking, operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) of the Niger State Police Command have rescued Rahamat, who was sold twice for a total of ₦6.6 million.
Originally from Sabon Wuse, Abuja, Rahamat was recovered in Asaba, Delta State, following a series of coordinated investigations that began with the arrest of one Victoria Chukwumezie at Diko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State on November 5, 2025.
At the time of her arrest, Chukwumezie was found in possession of three children.
According to a statement released on Thursday, by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, Chukwumezie’s confession led SCID operatives to Asaba on November 24, where Rahamat was successfully rescued.
Further investigations revealed that a woman named Rosemary, based in Nyanya, Abuja, allegedly sold Rahamat to Pastor Vincent Emmanuel of Asokoro, Abuja, for ₦2.8 million.
Pastor Emmanuel then resold the girl to Anthonia Nwabufor for ₦3.8 million.
Nwabufor, reportedly based in London, had instructed that the child be handed over to her mother in Asaba, where arrangements were being made to transport her abroad.
Since the initial arrest at Diko Junction in Gurara LGA, police operatives have recovered six children linked to the trafficking syndicate. A total of eight suspects have been arrested in connection with the case.
SP Wasiu Abiodun has assured the public that investigations are still ongoing as authorities work to dismantle the criminal trafficking network and bring all perpetrators to justice. (Nigerian Tribune)
