Alimosho Lagos launches half-price food initiative

Alimosho Local Government Area has launched a Half-Price Foodstuff Sales Initiative to support households across the council.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event at the Council Secretariat in Akowonjo drew residents, leaders, market groups, and beneficiaries who praised its impact.

Council Chairman, Akinpelu Johnson, said on Wednesday the initiative became necessary due to growing economic challenges affecting families.

He said the council aimed to support households and ensure residents did not go to bed hungry.

Johnson stressed that subnational governments must act responsibly and compassionately to complement federal efforts.

He explained that major staples, including rice, beans, yam, garri, spaghetti, eggs, and vegetable oil, would be sold at half price.

He said the discounted sales would ease access for low-income households, widows, the elderly, and vulnerable groups.

Johnson added that the programme was designed to make essential food items more affordable for all residents.

He assured the community that the intervention would not be a one-off initiative.

He said the gesture aligned with the WISE Agenda, which prioritises welfare, empowerment, and sustainable development.

Johnson added that the council would expand the initiative and introduce more welfare programmes.

Legislative Leader, Semiu Olamilekan, praised the chairman for initiating what he described as a people-centred intervention.

He said the programme addressed residents’ needs and strengthened the council’s commitment to household welfare.

Olamilekan noted that Alimosho acted at a time when many communities faced harsh economic conditions.

He said the half-price sales reflected unity, compassion, and shared responsibility within the community.

He added that the programme aimed to ease hardship and reinforce social connections among residents.

Olamilekan commended the administrative team, market leaders, and volunteers who ensured a smooth rollout.

He urged residents to cooperate and maintain orderliness as the initiative continued.

He reaffirmed legislative support for policies that uplift residents and promote inclusive development.

He said the programme would run monthly as the council broadened its social welfare schemes.

Residents expressed optimism that the intervention would stabilise household spending and improve community well-being. (NAN)
