PDP crisis: BoT disowns reconciliation report, backs convention

The Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party has dissociated itself from a report of its reconciliation committee, saying it has not been adopted.

The leaked report obtained by Saturday PUNCH on Friday was signed by the six-man panel inaugurated last week to broker peace between the two factions of the party ahead of the national elective convention, which begins today in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Conflicting court orders are fuelling divisions within the ranks of the PDP, leading to two factions led by Abdulrahman Mohammed (Acting National Chairman) and Umar Damagum, the National Chairman of the party, respectively.

While the Damagum-led National Working Committee enjoys the backing of the PDP Governors’ Forum, the Abdulrahman-led group relies heavily on the support of the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike.

With both sides taking opposing stands on the convention, the BoT last week constituted a panel chaired by Ambassador Hassan Adamu to bring the warring parties to a negotiating table.

On Friday, the report of the committee, advising the party to suspend the convention and set up a caretaker committee, leaked; a development that obviously embarrassed the Adolphus Wabara-led BoT.

In a statement issued by Wabara on Saturday, the committee, while not denying the factuality of the report, said it has not been adopted and therefore does not represent its position.

The statement read in part, “The Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party categorically dissociates and distances itself from the purported Report of the BoT Reconciliation Committee being circulated in some sections of the media.

“The BoT states in clear terms that the content of the said Report is not and does not represent the official position of the Board.

“Having not been considered or adopted by the BoT, it cannot in any form or guise whatsoever be regarded as the position of the BoT.

“The BoT is unwavering in its endorsement of the conduct of the elective national convention as scheduled on Saturday, 15 to Sunday, 16 November 2025 in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, for the purpose of electing a new set of leaders to pilot the affairs of the party in the next four years.

“This position is guided by the judgment of the Supreme Court, which reaffirmed the supremacy of a political party in the conduct of its internal affairs.”

The BoT dismissed the suggestion for a caretaker Committee for the party, saying, “Such an idea cannot be contemplated as the Board and, of course, the PDP, have irreversibly decided for an elective national convention which is within the scope of the internal affairs of the party to which the courts have no jurisdiction.

“The BoT therefore urges party members to remain committed and focused on the success of the elective national convention.” (PUNCH)
