A former Minister of Aviation, Chief Osita Chidoka, has decried consistent voter apathy in the South East region during election processes.
Chidoka made the disclosure shortly after casting his vote in his home town, Obosi, in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra state on Saturday during the state governorship election.
"Anambra state and all the South East states consistently fall below the national average of 20 per cent, sometimes 18 per cent in national average.
"We need to up our voter turnouts, not just for this particular governorship election, not for who has won or lost, but for us as a region. We need to have better voter turnouts.
"We should not be looking at voter turnout as per election or our candidate has won. No, we need voter turnout because we want to meet the national average," he said.
However, Chidoka, who was also a former Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, commended the peaceful governorship election in the state.
"I am impressed with the peaceful exercise today. We are improving everyday in electoral process, we have to keep it up," he stated.
