The legislative arm of the Agege Local Government Area is awaiting the approval of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for AbdulGaniyu Obasa to assume office as the new chairman of the council.
This followed the resignation of the incumbent chairman, Tunde Azeez, popularly known as Disco, who stepped down, citing health reasons.
The PUNCH reports that AbdulGaniyu, who is the Vice Chairman of Agege LGA and the son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has been acting as chairman for about two months since Azeez proceeded on medical leave.
Findings from sources in Agege revealed that Azeez had earlier written to the council’s legislative arm, notifying it of his trip to the United Kingdom for medical treatment.
Speaking with The PUNCH in a telephone interview on Wednesday, the Leader of the Agege Legislative Arm, Haruna Adeshina, confirmed that the lawmakers had received and deliberated on Azeez’s letter of resignation.
“We received a letter from the chairman, Honourable Tunde Azeez, alias Disco. The Clerk of the House read the letter on the floor of the House,” Adeshina said.
On the next steps, he explained, “After that, we need to go ahead and confirm the acting Chairman as the new chairman of the council, that’s Honourable AbulGaniyu Vinod Obasa. We are writing to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to confirm what we did on the floor of the House today.”
He confirmed that Azeez had earlier written about a month ago to notify the House of his medical trip to the United Kingdom.
He confirmed that the House had written to the governor and was awaiting his approval of their resolution.
AbdulGaniyu was initially being marketed to contest as Chairman of Agege LGA ahead of the July 12, 2025, local government elections.
A political group, Agege Youth Vanguard, had purchased the N5m chairmanship nomination form for him in support of the young Obasa.
However, according to a source within the council, his name was later dropped by the Presidency. He eventually emerged as the Vice Chairman.
Azeez, who won the election, had spent only a short period in office before embarking on his medical trip, during which AbdulGaniyu began to act in his stead.
Reacting to the development, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Agege, Rotimi Sulaiman, commended Azeez’s decision to step down.
“Honourable Tunde Azeez has been long sick and his decision to resign and devote his attention to his health rather than being weighed down by the responsibility of that office is the wise decision any sane person should take.
“The beneficiary of that excellent decision, Abdulganiyu Obasa, is a visionary young man who, in the last few months of Azeez’s absence, has demonstrated uncommon capacity. I think Agege is lucky to have both guys,” he said in achat with our correspondent.
Meanwhile, Adeshina dismissed speculations linking Speaker Obasa to his son’s possible elevation to the chairmanship.
“In this life, no matter what you do, people will complain—whether good or bad. Everyone sees things differently,” he said.
He added that while criticism was welcome, the lawmakers were acting strictly within constitutional provisions.
“It’s not about Obasa or any political influence. We are carrying out our constitutional responsibility as a legislative arm. We cannot fold our arms when someone has made such a decision. Health is wealth. There’s nothing one can do without a sound health.” Adeshina, who represents Agege Ward C, told The PUNCH.
Both Obasa’s son and Azeez could not be reached for comments on Wednesday, as calls made to them were not answered. (PUNCH)
