Sen Uche Ekwunife, APC deputy governorship candidate in the forthcoming Anambra guber election
Anambra State Deputy Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Uche Ekwunife, has condemned in strong terms the brutal mob assault on two women, including a visibly pregnant victim, over allegations of theft.
A viral video circulating on social media showed the women being stripped naked, beaten, and paraded by an angry mob, sparking outrage across the country.
In a statement issued on Monday, Senator Ekwunife described the incident as “barbaric, dehumanizing, and an unpardonable crime against humanity,” calling it a shameful affront to womanhood, motherhood, and the rule of law.
“I am deeply outraged and heartbroken by the footage. No grievance, no matter how justified, can warrant such cruelty,”
“The sight of a pregnant woman being subjected to such brutality is particularly gut-wrenching. It is an inexcusable act that violates every moral and legal boundary,” she said.
The APC chieftain expressed concern over the recurring cases of jungle justice in Nigeria, warning that mob action undermines law enforcement institutions, erodes public trust, and entrenches a culture of lawlessness.
“Mob justice has no place in a democratic Nigeria. It is a dangerous affront to the rule of law and to every principle of civilization,” Ekwunife stated.
She called on the Inspector General of Police to order a thorough investigation into the attack and ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice.
“Justice must not only be done; it must be seen to be done,” she said, emphasizing that failure to punish offenders would embolden future acts of violence.
Ekwunife also extended her sympathy to the victims, urging relevant authorities to provide them with immediate medical treatment, psychological care, and legal aid to help them recover and reclaim their dignity.
She appealed to Nigerians to shun all forms of mob action and instead report suspected crimes through lawful and constitutional channels.
“We must reject jungle justice in all its forms and ensure that justice is served in courtrooms, not on the streets,” she concluded. (The Sun)
