Gov Makinde speaks during the logo launch
The Oyo State Government, on Monday, officially launched a competition for the best logo, theme, and mascot in preparation for the golden jubilee of the Pace Setter state.
This was announced by the Chairman of the Oyo State @50 Celebration Committee, Saheed Fijabi, during a press conference held at the Local Government Training Centre, Secretariat in Ibadan, the state capital.
The PUNCH reports that the State Governor, Seyi Makinde, had, on Monday, October 6, 2025, raised an 11-man committee headed by Fijabi to oversee the state at 50 Anniversary.
The former member of the House of Representatives described the golden jubilee as a reflection of the state’s identity, resilience, and shared aspirations, adding that the celebrations would encompass all the state’s geopolitical zones.
He said, “We shall involve all strata of society, regardless of age, gender, religion, belief, or profession. While the Executive arm of the State Government will lead the celebrations, the Legislative, Judiciary, Traditional and Religious bodies, artisans, students, farmers, and entrepreneurs will all play an active role as we celebrate our beloved Pacesetter State.
“In the spirit of inclusion and creativity, we are also announcing today (Monday) the Oyo @ 50 Logo, Theme, and Mascot Challenge, inviting designers, artists, and creative minds from within and outside the state to submit entries that capture our past achievements, our vibrant present, and our ambitious vision for the future.
“Submissions can be sent via email to oyostate50@oyostate.gov.ng or through WhatsApp on 09163121000, with attractive rewards awaiting winners.”
The former lawmaker explained that the anniversary would tell the story of how the state became a cradle of learning, a hub of creativity, and a pillar of economic and cultural excellence.
He added that the celebrations would also showcase the innovations and resilience of its people who continue to define its future.
It will be recalled that the state was created on February 3, 1976, by the military government of late General Murtala Mohammed.
Brig.-Gen. David Jemibewon (retired as Maj Gen) was the first military governor of the state between 1976 and 1978.
The state was carved out of the old Western State as part of the nationwide state-creation exercise aimed at bringing governance closer to the people and promoting balanced regional development.
At its creation, the state originally included the present-day Osun State, which was later separated in August 1991 by the General Ibrahim Babangida administration.
Over the past five decades, the state has evolved from its agrarian and educational roots into a centre of commerce, politics, and cultural renaissance in Nigeria’s South-West. (The PUNCH)
