The newly appointed Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has pledged to lead a professional, innovative, and people-centred Armed Forces committed to safeguarding Nigeria’s peace, unity, and territorial integrity.

Oluyede made the pledge while assuming command at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, following the formal handover by his predecessor, Gen. Christopher Musa.

He said his leadership would be anchored on professionalism, jointness, discipline, innovation, accountability, and service before self, with a renewed focus on intelligence-driven operations and synergy among the services.

“The threats confronting our nation such as terrorism, insurgency, banditry, cyber and maritime crimes, demand that we remain vigilant, innovative, and united.

“My leadership will be guided by professionalism, jointness, and accountability as we work to restore and sustain peace across our country,” he said.

Oluyede promised to strengthen collaboration with other security and law enforcement agencies, enhance operational capacity, and prioritise the welfare of troops.

He assured that welfare of officers and men would remain central to operational effectiveness.

The new CDS promised to continue to advocate improved housing, medical care, and training, and invest in the moral and psychological well-being of our personnel.

Oluyede called on Nigerians to continue supporting the military, stressing that national security was a collective duty.

“The fight to secure our nation is not for the military alone. It is a collective national responsibility. We draw strength from the trust and cooperation of the people we serve,” he said.

Oluyede also vowed to leverage research and technology to boost efficiency and self-reliance, pledging to build on the achievements of his predecessor.

While paying tribute to Gen. Musa, the new CDS commended his “visionary leadership” and “unwavering dedication” to national defence, describing him as “a commander who led with integrity, foresight and passion.”

In his valedictory remarks, Gen. Musa expressed gratitude to the Armed Forces for their loyalty and sacrifice, urging continued unity and professionalism under Oluyede’s command.

He said his 39-year career had been “challenging but fulfilling,” adding that the journey to a secure Nigeria must continue through cooperation between the military, government, and citizens.

“Whatever challenges we face as a nation, we will prevail. The task is not finished, but our armed forces remain resolute,” he said. (NAN)
